Walnut Deputy Who Shot Suspect Hit by Truck

The suspect, who has not been identified, allegedly drove his truck into the deputy, knocking him to the ground.

A man who drove into a sheriff's deputy, knocking him to the ground, was wounded early this morning in a deputy-involved shooting in Walnut, authorities said.

No deputies were injured in the shooting, which happened around 2 a.m. at the intersection of Lemon Avenue and Paseo Del Prado, said Los Angeles County sheriff's deputy Peter Gomez.

"A deputy was patrolling in the area when he saw a distraught, female adult walking alone," said Deputy Kim Manatt of the Sheriff's Headquarters Bureau.

"He made contact with the female to inquire on her well-being. Moments later, a male adult in a white vehicle approached from southbound on Lemon Avenue."

Manatt said the man yelled to the deputy saying the woman was his girlfriend and to let her go.

"From a distance, the deputy instructed the male to step out of his vehicle and speak to him," Manatt said.

The man instead drove his vehicle directly toward the deputy, striking the deputy and knocking him to the ground, Manatt said.

"During this time, a deputy-involved shooting occurred," Manatt said.

The suspect sped away about 200 feet before crashing into the center median, disabling the vehicle, Manatt said. He ran from the vehicle but was later taken into custody without further incident.

The suspect sustained one gunshot wound and was taken to a hospital where he was being treated for non-life threatening injuries.

The woman was released at the scene.

The deputy was treated at the scene for his minor injuries, Manatt said.

As is standard in cases of deputy-involved shootings in which someone is struck, the case will also be investigated by the Los Angeles County District Attorney's Office and the County of Los Angeles Office of Independent Review.
