Here are five things Diamond Bar and Walnut resident need to know today.

1. Today marks the deadline for candidates for Diamond Bar City Council to file nomination papers to run for the three seats available. The seats up for election are those of council members Steve Tye, Ling-Ling Chang and Mayor Pro Tem Ron Everett. Candidates may pick up nomination papers from the City Clerk (21810 Copley Drive, Diamond Bar, CA 91765) today from 7:30am to 4:30pm.

2. Partial closures of the 60 freeway return this weekend, as Caltrans continues work on a $121.5 million pavement rehabilitation project. A schedule of the closures planned can be found here.

3. The Diamond Ranch High School Football Boosters organization is hosting its annual Bunco Night fundraiser tonight.  The event kicks off at 7 p.m. at the Diamond Bar Community Center, 1600 S. Grand Ave. Click here for more information.

4. A newborn baby boy was surrendered early this week at a Pomona hospital.  The safe surrender was the fourth of the year, the 107th since a Los Angeles County program was established 12 years ago.

5. Walnut Valley Unified School District Board Member Phillip Chen announced Thursday that he will run for the 55th District state Assembly seat.  Chen joins Diamond Bar Councilwoman Ling-Ling Chang in the race. Chang announced a few months ago that she plans to run for the seat currently held by outgoing Assemblyman Curt Hagman, R-Chino Hills.
