Photo Gallery: Annual Family Festival Cruises into Walnut

Walnut celebrated its 37th annual Family Festival Saturday with a parade, a fair with live entertainment, and 1K and 5K runs.

The theme for this year's event was "Cruzin' Around the World," which celebrated the places residents called home before coming to Walnut.

Mayor Antonio "Tony" Cartagena welcomed the crowd and thanked the volunteers, as did the other council members.  Assemblyman Curt Hagman spoke, as well as Laviana Someya, one of Walnut's 2013 Community Heroes. Someya and Walnut High track and field coach Jim Polite were honored as the city's heroes recently at the Los Angeles County Fair.

"Heroes are police officers and firefighters," she said.  "I am just a mom."

Someya encouraged attendees to get involved in the community.

"You can make a difference," she said.
