Gas Prices Reach Two-year High, Topping $4 Mark

The average gas prices climbed over the $4 mark this weekend across Los Angeles county for the first time since Aug. 17, 2008.

Local gas prices crept up again this week by about two cents. That puts gas at most local stations at just about $4 a gallon, according to the Automobile Club of Southern California’s Weekend Gas Watch.

The average price of self-serve regular gasoline in Los Angeles County rose for the fifth consecutive day Sunday by 1.1 cents to just over $4, which is the highest since Aug. 17, 2008. The average price is 29 cents higher than last month, and 93.3 cents higher than last year, according to the AAA Oil and Price Information Service.

“Although gas prices barely moved in the past week, the oil and wholesale gasoline market remain volatile amid concerns about world unrest and disasters, so it’s hard to say whether the pump price increases are coming to an end,” said Auto Club spokesperson Jeffrey Spring.

While motorists might be feeling the impact at the pump, the average price is still 59.2 cents less than the record high of 59.2 cents set on June 21, 2008.
