Gassing Up for Memorial Day Weekend

Motorists gearing up for a road trip or heading out to a family barbecue this Memorial Day weekend can expect to see lower prices at the pump.

Gas prices in the region have dropped around 10 cents in the past week, according to the Automobile Club of Southern California’s Weekend Gas Watch.

The average price of gas per gallon in the Los Angeles-Long Beach area is $4.093 per gallon, 9.6 cents lower than last month, and $1.05 higher than last year.

In the Inland Empire, the average price per gallon of gas per gallon is $4.046, 11.1 cents lower than last week, 16 cents lower than last month, and $1.03 more than last year.

In Orange County, the average price per gallon of gas is $4.064, down 9.9 cents from last week.

“The Auto Club is expecting that 84 percent of Southern California travelers, or 2.2 million people, will drive to their holiday destinations this weekend, so the gas price drops are coming at a good time,” said Auto Club spokesperson Jeffrey Spring.

“Overall, 2.62 million Southern Californians are expected to travel this weekend – a very slight increase of two-tenths of one percent from last year. The Auto Club recommends that travelers use online tools such as the free AAA TripTik app to shop around for the cheapest gas prices.”

The highest gas price listed in the United States is $5.54 in Death Valley, Calif., according to mapquest.com. The lowest price is $3.29 in Roswell, N.M.
