New Micro Cell Site on the Way

The city approved permits for T-Mobile to install a new micro-cellular antenna atop an existing light pole on Diamond Bar Boulevard to address a gap in service through that area.

Cell service along a stretch of Diamond Bar Boulevard will get a boost for T-Mobile customers this summer with the addition of a new "micro-cellular" site atop a city light pole.

The city's planning commission approved the project at a meeting in late May and Community Development Director Greg Gubman said construction should begin in the coming weeks.

The city agreed to approve the permit only after some deliberation of ways to integrate the new structures into the existing landscape.

The final plans include a $15,000 irrigation project and a bevy of native Toyon shrubs that will shield some of the above-ground installations at the site.

T-Mobile will pay for the installation and regular maintenance of the foliage at the site.

At an April meeting of the city's planning commission, officials said that the modified light pole will continue to hold the military banner of Enming Luo. The light pole belongs to California Edison and is located on city property.

The cell site addition could also mean expanded service for AT&T customers pending a $39 billion acquisition of T-Mobile announced in March.

The merger still has regulatory hurdles to clear and has met with some opposition from critics who say AT&T and Verizon will hold a "duopoly" on cell phone service.
