[UPDATE] Tutoring Center Awarded Permit to Return to Business

The city's planning commission gave unanimous approval to a business permit for a tutoring center that had been previously operating for nine months without a license.

The Diamond Bar Planning Commission approved business permits for a tutoring center in South Diamond Bar after weeks of hangups over the center's parking demand.

The city and property owner agreed to a permit that caps the school's overall enrollment at 60 students with a maximum of 10 students in any one class.

Based on a recommendation from the city's traffic management staff, the center is also required to stagger classes at 15-minute intervals to space out pick-up and drop-off of the school's students, who are in kindergarten through sixth grade.

The new proposal will likely include a limitation on the total number of students that can be enrolled at the center, as parking near the building at 782 Pinefalls Avenue is limited.

Albrecht and Malraj that the tutoring center had been operating for nearly nine months by the end of 2010, when Los Angeles County Fire Department inspectors informed the city that the business was operating without proper permits.

Community Development Director Greg Gubman said the commission would likely hear a compromise to limit the total number of students at the center to 60 across the center's five class sessions for students from kindergarten through 6th grade.

The planning commission will meet tonight at 7 p.m. in the auditorium.

The full agenda is available at the city's website.
