2010 Census Shows 21 Percent Upswing in Asian Population

A batch of 2010 U.S. Census data was released Tuesday afternoon and details general demographic shifts in Diamond Bar since 2000. While the city's overall population scarcely shifted, the Asian population grew 21 percent.

Demographic data from the 2010 census released Tuesday afternoon show a surge in Diamond Bar's Asian population, while the city's overall population remained mostly static during the last decade.

Diamond Bar's Asian population grew 21 percent since 2000, while the White population dropped 20 percent. 

Overall, Diamond Bar saw a decrease of 743 residents since 2000, with a total of 55,544 people now calling Diamond Bar home.

The data released Tuesday does not break down the Asian population by national origin, but the Census Department's 2009 American Community Survey shows that Chinese residents made up 25.4 percent of Diamond Bar's overall population at that time, a total 14,443 of the 28,589 Asian residents.

In the 2009 survey, Korean residents made up 10.9 percent of the population and Filipino residents made up 6.1 percent.

Since the 2009 American Community Survey, the overall Asian population has grown by 555 people and makes up 52.4 percent of the city's residents.

, Diane Sartor, the director of the in North Diamond Bar, said she and her staff at the facility speak an array of Chinese dialects, catering to the diverse diaspora of Chinese and Taiwanese parents that she said move to Diamond Bar for the schools.

"We exist because of the school district," Sartor said.

While all instruction at ACI is conducted in English, Sartor, who speaks fluent Chinese, said that almost all of the tutoring center's students are Chinese or Taiwanese and that the center has catered to Chinese residents since opening in 1989. 

Broken down by race, other groups saw marginal shifts over the last ten years in Diamond Bar. The African American population dropped by 392 residents and the Hispanic or Latino population increased by 745 residents since 2000.

Editor's Note: The number of Diamond Bar's Hispanic population was incorrect in the data table for Diamond Bar in the first version of this story. The 2000 population was listed as 13,102. The correct figure for 2000 is 10,939. The story correctly identified the change in the Hispanic population for the decade. There are 745 more Hispanic residents in 2010 than in 2000, according to the decennial census.
