5K Run Honors 9/11 First Responders

L.A. County Fair's Tunnel to Towers event is the only leg in the Los Angeles area.

A 5K run in Pomona September 11 will honor the first responders of 9/11.

The Tunnel to Towers Run is organized by the Stephen Siller Tunnel to Towers Foundation, named for a fireman who lost his life in the Twin Towers. Although he was off work and about to play golf with his brothers, Siller heard about what had happened and raced to the scene. At first, he was unable to make it to the World Trade Center because the Brooklyn Battery Tunnel was closed to traffic; instead of turning around, he ran through the tunnel with 60 pounds of gear in tow.

This year, the L.A. County Fair is hosting the only Los Angeles leg of the national event.

September 10 and 11 will mark "A Weekend for Heroes" at the fair. On both days, active and retired U.S. military, reserves, and emergency service personnel just have to show their ID, and along with a guest will pay just $1 for entrance. Proceeds of the money will be donated to USA Cares, an organization that provides programs and assistance to military personnel.
