Are You Ready For An Emergency?

September is National Emergency Preparedness Month

September is National Emergency Preparedness Month, and the city of Diamond Bar is offering tips that will keep residents safe should disaster strike.

*Create a plan for your family so you know where everyone is in case of emergency. You should designate a central contact, preferably out of state, who everyone can call with their location. Also, devise escape routes in your home and choose a meeting place in case something happens while no one is at home.

*Make sure you have an up-to-date emergency supply kit, filled with water (one gallon per person, per day, for at least three days), a three-day supply of non-perishable food, a battery powered radio, prescription medicine, and copies of important documents, like insurance documents. Don’t forget hygiene products, clothes, and activities, including puzzles and games. Have extra batteries to use for the radio and flashlight.

*Remember your pets, and have enough food set aside for them as well.

*Only shut off gas if you see, smell or hear it escaping. If you do have to turn it off, call your utility company and don’t try to turn it back on yourself.

*The city has a free Emergency Alerts program that will notify subscribers via voice, text, or e-mail messages about emergency situations. You can sign up here

*The L.A. County Specific Needs Awareness Planning Voluntary Registry is managed by the L.A. County Office of Emergency Management, and is a way for residents to provide information to officials about access or functional needs. To register, click here.

*Depending on the emergency, area news will provide details. The city of Diamond Bar’s website will be updated, and Channel 3 (Time Warner) and Channel 47 (Verizon FIOS) will also share information.
