Celebrating Old Glory in Diamond Bar

Some Diamond Bar residents will celebrate Flag Day with a host of patriotic decorations. How do you celebrate?

Flag Day may take a back seat to the popular Independence Day holiday, but it’s still observed by many fans of Old Glory itself every June 14.

Diamond Bar resident Sandy Roderick said she is celebrating the day with a host of patriotic kitchen decorations.

According to the History of Flag Day website, the day dedicated to celebrating the American flag may have originated in 1885 with BJ Cigrand, a schoolteacher who arranged a celebration for students in the Fredonia, Wisconsin Public School, District 6.

June 14 was chosen by Cigrand, as it is the day the Second Continental Congress passed a resolution to adopt the flag.

According to the Flag Day site, Cigrand continued to be an advocate for the day, giving interviews to numerous magazines and newspaper over the years.

Local Flag Day celebrations are hard to find but the San Dimas-based organization Helping Establish a Remembrance Of Every Serviceperson, or H.E.R.O.E.S., is planning its official Veterans Monument Groundbreaking at 5 p.m. on the corner of San Dimas Avenue and Commercial Street.

The ceremony will take place at the site of the future monument and the public is invited to attend and to bring flags.
