Diamond Bar Receives an "F" from the American Lung Association

The annual State of Tobacco Control 2012 report came out today, and Diamond Bar was one of several cities to earn an "F."

The city of Diamond Bar received an “F” grade from the American Lung Association in California in its annual tobacco control report.

The American Lung Association released the annual State of Tobacco Control 2012 report today. It provides grades to the federal government and all 50 states and the District of Columbia on four key tobacco control areas. In conjunction with this national report, the American Lung Association in California released the State of Tobacco Control 2012 California Local Grades report, which issues grades to all cities and counties in California on local tobacco control policies including those for smoke free outdoor environments, smoke free housing, and reducing sales of tobacco products.

To arrive at the grades, the American Lung Association in California looked at everything from smoking restrictions at public events to the sale of tobacco products near schools and parks. Points were given in 16 categories.

Diamond Bar received just two points in one category: recreation areas, meaning that smoking is prohibited in some parks and trails but not all recreation areas. It earned zeroes across the other categories, with an overall tobacco control grade of “F.”

Diamond Bar wasn’t alone on the bottom; nearly 2/3 of all municipalities in the state received an “F” grade for their overall tobacco control grade.
