Former Diamond Bar School Volunteer Pleads Not Guilty to Stealing Funds

Lisa May, also known as Lisa Haygood, is being accused of stealing close to $40,000 from Castle Rock Elementary School's nonprofit club.

A former Diamond Bar elementary school volunteer pleaded not guilty today to charges that she stole nearly $40,000 from a fundraising organization run by parents.

Lisa May, also known as Lisa Haygood, appeared in Pomona Superior Court to formally hear the charges against her. A preliminary hearing has been set for July 9 at 8:30 a.m. in Department N.

May, 44, has been charged with six felony counts including grand theft and forgery.  The former Castle Rock Elementary School Community Club volunteer has been accused of allegedly forging a name on checks belonging to the nonprofit organization totaling $39,651.

The club's purpose is to raise money and enhance opportunities for students, the Los Angeles County Sheriff's Department wrote in a news release about May's arrest.

Detectives from the Walnut/Diamond Bar Sheriff’s Station took May into custody March 5.

The alleged theft took place during a six-year period, sheriff's investigators said.

Other members of the group reportedly discovered the missing money in June 2011 when they reviewed the financial books and records, according to a complaint the Los Angeles County District Attorney's office filed March 13.

May remains free on $120,000 bail.
