Keep in Mind Safety Tips During High Winds

Southern California Edison is sharing safety tips to remember during periods of high winds and potential power outages.

With recent wind damage and power outages still fresh in everyone’s minds, Southern California Edison is reminding customers to stay safe during today and tomorrow’s expected high winds.

*Do not approach a downed line or dangling wire, even if it does not appear to be live. If you see one, immediately call 911.

*If traffic signals are out, approach the intersection as a four-way stop.

*If you power is out, do not use outdoor heating or cooking equipment inside. These items can emit carbon monoxide or other toxic gases.

*Be sure to have flashlights and a battery-operated radio. Check to see if the batteries are new.

*Avoid using candles as a source of lighting, due to the fire hazard.

*To keep your food as fresh as possible, keep the doors of your freezer and refrigerator closed. To keep food cold, place blocks of ice inside.

*If you use a generator, place it outdoors and plug individual appliances directly into the generator. Use a heavy-duty extension cord. If you connect a generator directly to household circuits, this creates “backfeed,” which is dangerous to repair crews.

If there are any outages, Southern California Edison will provide updates on its website, Twitter account, and Facebook page
