Keep Pets Cool with Rising Temperatures

Temperatures are set to hit the high 90s by Tuesday. In a recent release, the city of Diamond Bar gave a few tips on how to keep your pets cool and safe as the summer heat lingers on.

The August heat is expected to return after an unseasonal rain over the weekend.

The National Weather Service projects highs in the mid-90s Monday and a high of 97 on Tuesday in Diamond Bar.

As the temperatures rise, the city released a reminder to residents to be careful when exercising pets in the summer heat.

The city reminds residents that hot pavement can burn a dog's paws and that dog walking should be limited to the early morning or evening on very hot days.

The city release also said that sunscreen is not just for humans. Animals with light-colored fur can be more vulnerable to sunburn and skin cancer and sunscreen should be applied to a dog's nose and ears if spending time in direct sunlight.

If a dog begins to show signs of heat exhaustion, the dog should be moved into the shade and have cool water applied over its body. The city advises giving small drinks of water and contacting a veterinarian immediately.

Just this weekend, a dog suffering from heat exhaustion and two hikers from the five-mile Bridge to Nowhere Trail above Azusa.
