Mt. Calvary Student Scores Top Art in County Contest

Mt. Calvary Lutheran School fifth grader Jessy Lau recently won a county art contest aiming to spread awareness about mosquito control and dangers.

Jessy Lau is biting back against mosquitos.

The fifth-grader recently won a county art contest to promote mosquito awareness that will put her post front and center in 40 Los Angeles Metro buses as part of a summer campaign by the Greater Los Angeles County Vector Control District.

Lau said that she didn't know at first that the class project was part of a county-wide contest, but she was pleased with the outcome.

"After we did half of it, my teacher said we were going to be in a contest and everyone was shocked when she said that," Lau said.

She was even more surprised when she found out that she had won, bringing in a $100 U.S. Savings Bond and a pizza party for her class.

Lau said she learned valuable lessons about how to prevent mosquito bites as well.

"Wear long sleeves when you're hiking," Lau said, "and if you have or see a pool that hasn't been used in a while, you can call vector control."

Lau said that dumping stagnant water and keeping a clean yard can be the best ways to keep mosquitos at bay.

Besides drawing cartoons and nature scenes, Lau said she also enjoys dancing and gymnastics, and science and math are her favorite subjects in school.

As for the poster's source of inspiration, Lau remains humble.

"It just came to me," Lau said.
