Rideshare and Metrolink Aren't Just for the Daily Grind

Metrolink Trains and Ridesharing offer local convenient methods to save time, money, and reduce your carbon footprint.

Sure, many in eastern Los Angeles County use the Industry Metrolink Station on the daily round trip downtown to "bring home the bacon," but the train is not just for the daily grind.

There are many fun destinations within reach without a car. While the lack of independence can be a hurdle, it comes with the freedom of not searching (and paying) for a parking space, as well as saving money on gas and maintenance for your vehicle.

Many businesses in downtown Los Angeles, and essentially all government agencies will subsidize up to 60 percent of a monthly Metrolink pass.

The trains are known to be clean, comfortable, good company, and prompt.

The biggest drawbacks to public transportation, especially for those without subsidies, are the rising cost, and infrequency of trains in the afternoon and after 6:30 p.m.

With all the other factors are considered, Metrolink is still a good value, especially with the uncertainty of gas prices! Check out the schedules for yourself.

Ridesharing is another option, which allows commuters to take the Diamond lane through Industry on the 60 freeway and much of the San Bernardino freeway into Los Angeles and throughout southern California.

Registration to find other commuters can be done online. Park and ride lots are located in Walnut and at both ends of Diamond Bar — one near the intersection of the 57 and 60 freeways and another near the 57 and Diamond Bar High School — where commuters can meet up to carpool.

When the workday is done

One of my favorite adventures is to catch the Metrolink train stopping at Union Station. Shopping and lunch in China Town, Olvera Street, or my favorite — a double dip lamb sandwich at Philippe the Original — are all within walking distance of the station.

Another favorite Los Angeles adventure via Metrolink is limited to four Fridays in July because of a restricted train schedule.

The free Grand Performance series offers world music, poetry, and other entertainment in the California Plaza at 300-350 S. Grand Avenue downtown.

This July's free concerts will be held on July 8, 15, 22, and 29 at noon, allowing enough time for a round trip on the train.

These special day concerts are also the perfect opportunity experience two other unique forms of public transportation: the subway. Upon arriving at Union Station, you will catch the Red Line Subway to the Pershing Square Station.

For lunch, I often stop here at the Central Market on Hill Street or pack in advance.

From Pershing Square, catch the 25-cent Angels Flight funicular railway to the Grand Plaza for the entertainment where other fast-food options are also available. Enjoy the free show, and make sure to check your return times to the Industry Metrolink Station.
