The 60 Freeway 'Summer Slam' to Return This Weekend

The partial closures will affect the area of the 60 freeway between Nogales Street and Fullerton Road in Rowland Heights.

Weekend partial closures of lanes on State Route 60 will return Friday.

The lane and ramp closures, dubbed the "summer slam," are part of a $121.5 million pavement rehabilitation project. This portion of the project involves the area of the freeway between Fullerton Road and Nogales Street.

"Although NOT a full freeway closure, motorists should expect delays and are strongly advised to use alternate routes, avoid the area or use public transit," officials said in a statement.

The following is a list of the closures this weekend:

Friday, Aug. 9 at 10 p.m. – Monday, Aug. 12 at 5 a.m.

  • 3 lanes of eastbound SR-60 to be closed
  • Hacienda Boulevard, Azusa Avenue, Fullerton Road and south Nogales Street on-ramps to be closed
  • Fullerton Road and Nogales Street off-ramps to be closed
The pavement rehabilitation work is to repair the 60, which as a major thoroughfare serving commuters between Los Angeles and San Bernardino and Riverside counties, has experienced extensive wear, officials said.

State Route 60 is undergoing renovation in both directions between Interstate 605 and State Route 57. Besides the road pavement work, contractors will install traffic loops and do striping within the project's boundaries. The project is expected to be completed in late 2014, officials said. The project is funded through the State Highway and Operations Protection Program.

"Once the work is completed in late 2014, the new surface will provide a smoother, safer drive for motorists, reduce time required for maintenance and minimize the need for further lane closures," officials said.
