First Day of Spring Greets with Rain

Astronomical spring begins at 4:21 p.m. today, but morning has been marked with rain and high gusts throughout the southland. For Diamond Bar and Walnut residents experiencing a 10-day water conservation period, the rain may be welcomed.

While the first day of spring brought an onslaught of rain to the San Gabriel Valley, plants and lawns that would otherwise experience a 10-day dry spell are grateful.

Today is the third day of for Diamond Bar and Walnut, where the water supply has been cut in half.

The Walnut Valley Water District has asked residents to stop all lawn and yard irrigation measures and to cut all non-essential water uses until the end of the 10-day construction at the Weymouth Water Treatment Plant in LaVerne.

The rain has already caused trouble for participants in the Los Angeles marathon, where over 200 runners were checked for mild hypothermia after the rain-soaked race, which ended at around 1 p.m.

And while the rain continues to fall, the vernal equinox will occur this evening at 4:21 p.m., marking the beginning of astronomical spring for those in the northern hemisphere.
