Walnut Gets Grant to Plant 250 Trees in City Parks

The city of Walnut will plant 250 trees thanks to the Los Angeles County Regional Park and Open Space District's First Supervisorial District's Competitive Tree Planting Grant Program.

In May 2012, First District Supervisor Gloria Molina announced the availability of extra Proposition A funds to be used for a competitive tree planting grant program, according to city staff.

On Aug. 8, 2012, the Walnut City Council approved a resolution to authorize City Manager Rob Wishner to apply for a grant through the program.  On June 24, the city was awarded a $91,900 grant to plant the 250 trees.

Last week, the council unanimously voted to appropriate the money from the general fund to be reimbursed by the county.

The new trees will be planted in Arroyo, Walnut Ranch, Butterfield, Norm Ashley, Creekside, Snowcreek, Country Hollow and Suzanne parks, according to staff.

The selection will be based on Walnut's tree palette, which was created based on an arborist's recommendations.

"The planting of trees in the city will help the environment through improved air quality and increase the beauty of Walnut neighborhoods," Senior Management Analyst Alicia Jensen wrote in a report to council.
