What Do You Know About Peeps?

Peeps: love 'em or hate 'em, they're an Easter candy staple. How much do you know about these confections?

They’re one of the most distinct Easter candies around, but what exactly is a Peeps chick?

Here are some fun facts about the brightly-colored candy:

  • Peeps are made out of marshmallow, corn syrup, gelatin, and carnauba wax.
  • It only takes six minutes to make one Peeps chick. In the 1950s, it took 27 hours.
  • When Peeps were first produced, they were squeezed out of a pastry tube, with a worker painting on the eyes by hand. Now, it’s all done by machine, which is how millions are made each day.
  • Next to yellow, pink is the second most popular Peeps color, followed by lavender, blue, orange, and green.
  • Every Easter, enough Peeps are eaten to span the Earth’s circumference more than once.
  • In 1958, the company started producing other shapes, beginning with pumpkins for Halloween.
  • The first flavored Peeps, vanilla creme, were introduced in 1999.
  • Sugar-free Peeps came out in 2007.
  • For the most devoted fans, there are three Peeps & Company stores, with the first one having been opened in 2009. The locations are at the Mall of America in Bloomington, MN; National Harbor, MD; and Bethlehem, PA.
  • People at home have probably been doing this forever, but Chocolate Covered Peeps were first in stores in 2010.
  • Are you looking for a Peeps-inspired dessert? The Just Born website has several, including for Peeps Lemon Curd Cake, Krispy Bunny Treats, and Peeps Meringue Cups.
