Mounties Win Second Straight Fullerton College Tournament

Mt SAC faces archnemesis Cerritos College for the second year in a row for the Fullerton College holiday tournament championship.

FULLERTON – The Mt. SAC women’s basketball team won its second consecutive Fullerton College Tournament Saturday afternoon, dispatching its arch nemesis Cerritos College 74-57.  The two met in last year’s championship game which Mt SAC won 61-58.

Ashley Carter led three Mounties in double figures, garnering her the tournament’s MVP.   Carter had 16 points, a rebound and two assists.  Ashley Burchfield added 12 points, seven rebounds, while Mason Morgan pitched in 14 points, four rebounds and a steal.  Jourdan Cooper was also named all-tournament with her nine points, four rebound performance.

Mt. SAC took a brief lead when Shawlina Segovia made one of two free throws to take a 1-0 lead.  Cerritos then went on a 4-0 run before Burchfield put an end to it with a pass from Carter for an easy layup.   Neither team could get any significant run going. Mt SAC however went on a 7-4 run to take the 38-26 lead and momentum into halftime.

Angel Pena led the way for the Falcons, going for 19 points, two steals and two assists en route to an all-tournament selection.   Deenesha Bee Joined Pena on the all-tournament team with 13 points, two rebounds and a steal, while Diamond Roberts tallied nine points in the losing effort.

Bee opened the second half with a quick 3-pointer, but then Mt. SAC went on an 18-2 run to take a commanding 56-33 lead.

Cerritos, however, would not go away, as they were able to go on a 10-3 run of its own to close the gap to 65-50 but they would get no closer as Mt. SAC pulled away to seal the victory.

“They’re a very good team,” Mounties head coach Brian Crichlow said, “but we were able to wear them down in the second half by running our plays and getting good results.”

Mt. SAC travels to Long Beach City College Friday to face the Vikings in a non-conference matchup.  Tip-off is 5pm.

Crichlow says that his team is still trying to “find its identity.”

“We’re playing the roller coaster thing,” he said. “We play in spurts, and we are still trying to get it all together. If we play together we should be fine.”
