Mt. SAC Womens Volleyball Wins Home Opener, Third in a Row

Mt SAC squeaks past Rio Hondo in a close match, faces tougher challenges in own tournament Friday afternoon starting at 3pm

WALNUT – After picking up two impressive road victories on the road last weekend, the Mt. SAC women’s volleyball picked up a not-so-impressive 25-17, 26-24, 28-26 victory Wednesday night it their home opener over  visiting Rio Hondo.

“It was a very sloppy-played match,” Mounties head coach Maria Denis said. “We dropped ourselves to their level, but we were able to get  the win tonight.”

Mt. SAC won the first set 25-17 in a somewhat convincing matter, going on a 6-1 run to get the set to set point at 24-16.  Both teams traded side outs with Mt. SAC prevailing on a hitting error.

Neither team could get any sustained runs going in either the second or third set of the match, as the lead would seesaw back and forth, both teams trading side outs.

“Especially in the last two games, many of the points that we got they gave to us (whether it be by hitting errors, blocking errors), we didn’t earn them,” Denis said.

Mt. SAC hosts a four-way tournament Friday featuring top teams including Riverside City College and College of the Desert.  First match starts at 3pm.

"We have to toughen up to play against stronger teams,” Denis said. “Friday we face two such teams.”
