Weekend Wrap-up: Diamond Ranch Girls Upend Diamond Bar; Mt. SAC Wins Two More to Lead South West Conference

Diamond Ranch Girls claim sole possession of second place in Hacienda League with win over Diamond Bar; Mt SAC wins two more to pace the South West Conference.

POMONA – The Diamond Ranch Panthers girls’ basketball team bounced back from last Wednesday’s loss to Bonita to take a 51-38 win Friday night in a key Hacienda League matchup. The win puts the Panthers in sole possession of second place at 6-2 with five games to go.

“We started out slowly early in the game,” Diamond Ranch head coach Mike James said. “We couldn’t get inside, but we started doing what we usually do and were able to take the lead.”

Chelsea Barnes' double-double (12 points, 14 rebounds) led the way for the Panthers, who, once again, did not have the services of Erika Williams who was unavailable due to an injury sustained earlier this year and has not played since. Barnes also had six steals, three blocks and two assists.

Sydney Cabellon hit three 3-pointers in the third quarter to spark a 9-0 run to increase the lead to as much as 22 as the Panthers would take a commanding 44-22 lead heading into the fourth.

"Along with Sydney's spark on offense, our defense also picked up the tempo in that third quarter, which we were able to carry over on offense that led to our doubling up the score on them," James said.

Diamond Bar would make it a game in the fourth quarter, outscoring the Panthers 17-6 as James would put in his reserves with the game well in hand.

Jasmin Trinh scored seven of her nine points in the final quarter; she would make five of six free throws along the way. Natalie Wong also pitched in nine for the Brahmas.

MT SAC MENS’, WOMENS’ BASKETBALL SWEEP CERRITOS

The Mt. SAC men’s and women’s basketball teams picked up a sweep of a doubleheader Wednesday night against the visiting Cerritos College Falcons, with the men winning 85-58 and the women winning 59-48.

Ashley Burchfield and Morgan Mason each scored 15 for the Mounties, who had to outlast several Cerritos runs to escape with a 28-27 lead at halftime.

“They made their runs off our mistakes,” Coach Brian Crichlow said. “And our ability to rebound the ball. Ashley [Burchfield] provides us with a big body and the ability to rebound better.”

Although held scoreless, Danielle Peacon provided the Mounties with 10 rebounds.

Andrina Rendon led the way for the Falcons with a game high 20 points.

The men’s basketball team would complete the sweep of Cerritos with an 85-58 win as the Mounties would lead wire to wire.

Cerritos would threaten, getting the score as close as 25-30 late in the first half, but Mt. SAC would pull away with a 13-7 run to take a 43-27 half time lead.

Corey Allen led four Mounties in double figures with 22 points, five assists, three steals and a rebound.  Lavelle McDade tallied 13 points, while Garrett Nevels and Taj Spencer would add 11 and 10 points, respectively. Spencer would also contribute defensively for the Mounties with eight rebounds and two blocks.

Cerritos also had three players in double figures, led by Michael Crosby’s 22 points, five rebounds and a block. Anthony Scott and Anthony Holiday pitched in 11 and 10 points, respectively. Darius Williams had eight, but contributed with three blocks and three rebounds on defense.

Mt. SAC hosts another double header Wednesday, as they welcome the Long Beach City College Vikings to the Mt. SAC gym. Tip off for the women’s game is 5 p.m., and 7 p.m. for the men’s game.
