A little more than fifty years has past since Martin Luther King, Jr. made the famous "I Have a Dream Speech" during the March on Washington for Jobs and Freedom.

In remembrance of King’s fight against racial inequality, we took a look at the numbers of how much the country has progressed and also how much work may still need to be done.

Take a look above to see what we found.

While King fought for equality of all races, this data visual will primarily look at the progress among African Americans.

How much progress do you think we've made towards racial equality? Tell us in the comments or in a blog post.

For the last 50 years Blacks have had affirmative action, preferential job treatment and educational scholarships. Where has that gotten them? The biggest destruction to the Black community was the War on Poverty and Welfare. Government handouts for not working, having lots of kids, and for having fathers that were not present in the family. This is the biggest disincentive for ambition and work the country has ever known. The American Indian has also fallen under the effect of government handouts. It is too easy to just sit at home and milk the system and blame racism, poverty, etc.

Who wants to be equal to the European people who murdered, an stole their way to success. Blacks lost their innovations, land, and their lives. Someone seems to know about Black life, but seems to be telling a one sided story. What happened in those 500 years a slave till now. Did he mention that receiving your own benefits is no hand-out. Europeans own 95 % of the American worth of 14 trillion dollars, due largely in part to slavery. Wall Street is one small example. Who wants to be equal to a race that murdered, and stole their way to success, and are still boasting of their dastardly deeds, with not even a hint of remorse.

RR You are describing the history of the world from the dawn of man and it is still occurring right now. Is not only the province of Europe but has moved from continent to continent as history progressed. Look to the Banana Republics of Africa for current examples. I guess the author was talking about financial equality, not moral equality. That should make you happy.

Wrong again, we are talking about right now, you are in denial, your past shapes your future.

R Hall, I dislike your racist comments towards white people. White people did not steal anything- they built empires for good. I understand your envy and jealousy of white European ancestry- they invented the printing press, the automobile, human flight and many other things. America, the greatest nation on earth, was founded by white Europeans. You can dislike white Europeans all you like, but don't deny how these people have shaped the world for centuries, it makes you look like a fool.

Another in denial mode, if you had the facts, and not your distorted opinions you would know the truth. But I realize the true does hurt. Your whole history is a prevarication, to be more precise, one would call Europeans in America identity theft. Do you ever wonder why everything you invented was in America, next to a hundred Black workers, and not in Europe. Looks like you had a real need for Black help. 200 million thrown in the Gulf of Mexico, another 2 billion you killed who fought, or refused to accept slavery. Another lie, George Washington was the first president. Google John Hanson, a Black man was the first president of America, 7 years before George made us a slave. Which means Obama is the first gay president, the only European invention. You need to kiss every Black person's feet, are you would still be in your cave, making love with your favorite bear, are your favorite brother. Also reverse psychology is not a valid defense for your dastardly deeds, and for the record, nobody said white people but you. Which also means you know that it is true........have a good day sir.
