In Remembrance: Estela Hernandez, Pastor Gil, Barbara Deane Amend

Estela Hernandez

Estela Hernandez, a Diamond Bar resident, died in her home Nov. 17. She was 88.

Hernandez was born July 2, 1925 in Los Angeles California to parents Emilia and Natividad Velazquez. She was a business owner in the garment industry for more than 40 years.

Pastor Gil

Pastor Gil, a local man with ties to St. Denis Catholic Church in Diamond Bar, died Nov. 3 of natural causes. He was 86.

Gil was born in Tunja, State of Boyaca, in the South American country of Columbia on July 16, 1927.  He immigrated to the United States in 1948 to study engineering at Oklahoma University.  He met his wife Luisa on campus and they married in Norman, Okla. in 1950. They soon moved to Los Angeles.

Gil worked in manufacturing and management until retiring in 1990. He spent many years volunteering at St. Dennis.

Barbara Deane Amend

Barbara Deane Amend, a former Diamond Bar resident and Cal Poly Pomona employee, died Oct. 30 unexpectedly at her Del Mesa Carmel home. She was 80.

The Indiana-born Amend grew up in Flossmoor, Ill. She moved to California in the 1950s and worked for Burlington Industries and Cal Poly Pomona.

She married her husband Arthur Amend and they raised their two sons in Altadena and Diamond Bar.  After her husbnd died in 1991, she moved to Carmel, Calif. to be close to her sister and the area's cultural offerings.
