A 54-year-old transient man was apparently shot in the early morning hours, but nearby people did not report hearing the shots until a body was found five hours later in Pomona, a police sergeant said.
It appeared that the 54-year-old man had set up his small sleeping area just across a parking lot in the area of the 600 block of New York Drive when he was shot several times, said Pomona police Sgt. Patrick O'Malley.
About 2:45 a.m. Sunday, people working in the area of the 1900 block of West Orange Grove Avenue heard several shots. They later said they did not call police because they thought officers would get other calls, O'Malley said.
About 7 a.m., a person driving in the 600 block of New York Drive noticed a man slumped in the parking lot. He said the subject did not appear to be moving and was concerned about the man's welfare, the police sergeant said.
Officers arriving at the scene saw the victim had been shot several shots and was dead. No witnesses were present at the time the body was found, O'Malley said.
Pomona police detectives asked anyone with any information regarding the shooting death to call them at 909-620-2085.
