A pedestrian was killed by a vehicle next to the Cal Poly Pomona campus Sunday, and the driver left behind evidence before speeding off, police said.

Christopher Guerrero, 36, of Diamond Bar was walking westbound in the number right lane of West Temple Avenue and Campus Drive around 5:15 a.m. He was struck by a Chevy truck or SUV that was also heading westbound, according to the California Highway Patrol.

The intersection sits at the line of the city of Walnut and Cal Poly Pomona.

It's unclear why Guerrero was in the street, said Sgt. Maehr of the CHP.

He was pronounced dead at the scene.

"There were several pieces of vehicle debris left at the scene that were taken into evidence," Maehr said.

Westbound Temple Avenue was closed to traffic at University Drive at 7:28 a.m. and was re-opened by the CHP by 10 a.m.

A man tried to wave down a co-worker of mine this morning. She was startled by the man, it was 4:50 in the morning and she was alone in her car on a very dark road. She was hoping a male driver would stop and help him. An hour later we found out the man she saw was hit by a car and died. My condolences to his family.

Jack Jack thank you for the info but is there anymore details your co worker can give? Wave down as in he was trying to get a ride or he was in trouble waving down. And this road does anyone have any details how this road is? Thank you everyone again for your help and if anyone has anymore info please help us find this person that did this.

Melissa, he was waving what she thought was a hat. We were told it was a shirt. He stepped into the lane and waved the shirt up and down. She didn't see a disabled car along the road. The road cut through hills. Each side has fencing and only a dirt walk way. The center median is flat and wide. Towards the top of the hill the median turns into a center divider with bushes and no place to walk. Where he was struck may be where he had cross over to the side and walk along on the dirt path. The speed limit is 50 mph and does have some slight curves. Again, my condolences to your family.

Thank you for removing the racist and insensitive comments by Michael West. If you allow this person to continue to post his racist comments, you can count me out as a reader. Free speech is not a license to slander Hispanics or Asians. Walnut and Diamond Bar are great communities and his claims of corruption are slanderous and have gotten him soundly defeated in every election he participates. He has issues that should be dealt with by professionals.

Chris was a great guy and did not deserve this. He was a close friend of 20 plus years. He grew up 3 streets from me and his family and friends are devastated by this news. If anyone has any information please share it with the police.

Melissa, I'm very sorry for your loss. During an average weekday this section of road is a well-traveled hill, as it passes both Cal Poly and Mt. Sac JC. However, at approx. 5:00 a.m. on a Sunday morning, this is a rather isolated area--unlit, quiet. An unusual place for a pedestrian at that time. If you have any other questions, let me know. I work in this area
