Industry Sheriff's Deputies Rescue Woman Threatening to Jump from Bridge

Two Los Angeles County Sheriff's deputies from the Industry Station prevented a woman from jumping Friday from the Azusa Avenue bridge overpass.

The Industry station received a call at 10:10 a.m. about a woman in her mid 30s spotted hanging from overpass at Azusa Avenue and Valley Boulevard, according to a news release.

When they arrived on the scene, they saw a woman standing on the overpass edge outside of the rails.

"She was partially standing on the pavement and holding onto the rails, as if she was in the process of jumping off," Lt. Arthur Scott wrote in the news release.

Deputies Lorenzo Bright and Ruben Valencia cautiously approached the woman from opposite sides and quickly grabbed both of her arms simultaneously to prevent her from jumping. The deputies pulled her over the rail and back on to the street.

The woman rescued is a local transient who has had multiple contacts with Industry Sheriff's deputies, Scott said. The Los Angeles County Fire Department treated her at the scene and transported her to a local hospital in West Covina, where she was admitted for a 72-hour mental health observation.

"The holidays can be a time of great stress," he said. "Regardless of the issue we want to remind people there are people who care and resources available for help."

Those needing help can call the Suicide Prevention Hotline at 1-800-273-TALK (8255) or log on to the website at www.suicidepreventionlifeline.org for available resources. The phone lines and website are staffed 24 hours a day.
