Man Nabbed for Allegedly Robbing Industry Liquor Store with Screwdriver, Scissors

A man who allegedly robbed a City of Industry liquor store with a screwdriver and a pair of scissors was arrested Sunday night.

Tomas Olivarri, a 42-year-old Baldwin Park resident, was booked at the Industry Sheriff's Station on suspicion of assault with a deadly weapon, robbery, and several other outstanding warrants for his arrest, according to Sgt. Bob Boese.

The robbery happened at 7 p.m. Sunday in a liquor store in the 13400 block of Valley Boulevard.

Olivarri allegedly entered the store and demanded money from the clerk at the register, Boese said in a news release. The clerk and the suspect struggled, and Olivarri attempted to stab the clerk with the scissors.

The clerk deflected the assault. After grabbing the money from the register, the suspect ran out of the store and headed eastbound on Valley, Boese said.

Deputies from the Industry Sheriff's station arrived as the suspect after the suspect ran, spoke to the clerk, and got the suspect's last known direction. While searching the area, they spotted the suspect still running eastbound on Valley, he said.

Olivarri reportedly ran into traffic on Valley in an attempt to get away from deputies, prompting the temporary shut down of all lanes until he could be arrested, Boese said.

Both weapons were recovered, he said.

The suspect is being held in lieu of $156,000 bail, according to the Sheriff's Department.
