Pedestrian Critically Injured by Vehicle Dies

A elderly man who was struck by a vehicle and critically injured last month while crossing the street near Mount San Antonio College has died, authorities said.

Sze Yok Lee, 89, of Walnut, died at 8:46 p.m. on March 27 at Los Angeles County USC Medical Center from multiple traumatic injuries, Los Angeles County Coroners officials said. The death has been ruled an accident, officials added.

Los Angeles County Sheriff’s officials say they are continuing their investigation into the March 21 crash.

“We’re still looking into some things,” said Traffic Department investigator Deputy Paul Alaniz. As of April 3, it had not been decided if the driver involved in the collision will be cited, Alaniz said.

Lee had been crossing at the intersection of San Jose Hills Road and Grand Avenue about 6:40 a.m. when a passing vehicle struck him, sheriff's officials said. Lee was airlifted to USC.

The story, originally reported the day of the collision, drew a strong response.

“The driving around Mt. SAC is as bad as anywhere around the basin.,” wrote one Diamond Bar-Walnut Patch commenter who identified themselves as Jay. “I've nearly been hit on foot, on my bike and in my car. People run the lights at the Grand/Temple intersection so routinely it is utter lawlessness.”
