San Dimas Man Shoots, Kills Pitbull Attacking Horse

The attack occurred on Foothill Boulevard and Walnut Avenue shortly before 9 a.m., said Lt. David Vega of the sheriff's San Dimas station.

A 24-year-old man shot and killed one of two pit bulls attacking a woman and her horse along a trail in San Dimas Saturday, a sheriff's lieutenant said.

Authorities were notified of the attack in the area of Foothill Boulevard and Walnut Avenue at 8:58 a.m., said Lt. David Vega of the sheriff's San Dimas station."

"They knocked her off the horse and took the horse down,'' Vega said.

"One of them latched onto the horse's upper leg and locked on. She (the rider) suffered a few scrapes."

Vega said the man fired some shots from the .22- caliber rifle into the pit bull, breaking the dog's lock on the horse's leg and killing it.

The extent of the horses' injuries were not immediately known. Animal control workers arrived and took the other dog into custody. The dogs may have come from a local residence or pit bull rescue, the sheriff's lieutenant said. The shotgun-wielding man was not cited or arrested for the shooting.

took the other dog into custody. Did they read its miranda rights. What a stupid statement. You do not take an animal into custody.

This is yet another reason why those who advocate for pit bulls are most certainly not animal lovers, nor care about animal welfare. They only care about pit bulls. Here's a list tracking pit bull type dog attacks on horses, just the attacks that occurred from January to May 2008: http://www.dogsbite.org/blog-posts-dog-attacks-horses.php

Walking around with a gun in sheriff territory will get you killed. Heck, a toy gun will get you killed too. You have a 50/50 chance any encounter with sheriff's will get you killed. There's good reason they don't keep statistics on "bad shoots". LAPD covers that with drug/gun plants on bad shoot victims. Things haven't changed since Rampart.

The dog that was killed was a Bullmastiff, NOT a pitbull. This is the most blatant representation of irresponsible news reporting. SHAME on you.
