A former volunteer member of a Castle Rock Elementary School organization has been arrested and accused of stealing several thousands from the group.

Authorities said May, 44, forged a name on a check belonging to Castle Rock’s Community Club on more than one occasion, eventually pocketing $39,651.

The arrest has stunned the community. One parent, who asked not to be identified out of concern over possible retaliation, said May was seen as an important volunteer and local leader.

During meetings, the parent said May, the committee's treasurer, "would caution us to spend our funds wisely since school budgets were cut and times were lean."

May is briefly mentioned on Diamond Bar Patch for her work as Diamond Bar's AYSO Regional Commissioner.

The Castle Rock Community Club is a nonprofit organization created to raise funds and enhance opportunities for students at the school, Los Angeles County Sheriff’s officials wrote.

The theft reportedly occurred over a period of six years, Sheriff's investigators said. It was discovered in June of 2011 by other members of the community group when they sorted through a review of financial books and records, according to a complaint filed by the Los Angeles County.

The complaint was filed March 13. Her arraignment is set for May 3 in Pomona, Dept. N, District Attorney officials said.
