Sheriff's Relay Run Honors Fallen Deputies, Officers

Sheriff’s Deputies from the Walnut, San Dimas and Industry stations will join other deputies around the county and take part in the three-day 36th annual Memorial Torch Relay Run.

This year’s run is scheduled May 17, 18 and 19. It will honor Deputy Constable Charles De Moranville, Deputy Harry S. Guard and Deputy Emma Benson of the Los Angeles County Sheriff’s Department, and Chief Henry P. Tracy of the Pomona Police Department, all of whom were killed in the line of duty between 1909 and 1919.

The Memorial Torch Relay Run was established in 1976 to honor the memory of the peace officers in Los Angeles County who died in the line of duty, organizers said.

The run consists of 56 legs about 5 to 10 miles each and will begin on a non-stop journey from the Sherman Block Sheriff’s Headquarters building and travel 339 miles, officials said.

The Memorial Torch will pass each of the mainland Sheriff’s stations over the course of three days with the last run concluding on Sunday, May 19th at the Altadena Sheriff’s Station. Nearly 2,000 runners will participate in the relay.
