Suspects Named in 1989 Murder of La Puente Man

After nearly 23 years, two Central California men may answer for the death of 56-year-old Herbert Santos.

After nearly 23 years, San Bernardino County District Attorney officials have named suspects in the 1989 murder of a La Puente man.

Ruben Abad, 47, of Santa Maria, and Anthony Christopher Solis, 45, of Lompoc, are suspected in the fatal stabbing of 56-year-old Herbert Santos.

Abad faced a San Bernardino Superior Court Judge on Jan. 2 at a preliminary hearing and was bound over for trial, DA officials said.

Santos was found dead on March 1, 1989 off Stoddard Road in Victorville in San Bernardino County’s High Desert, Sheriff’s officials said. The killer had stabbed him repeatedly, according to the San Bernardino County Coroner’s office.

Several pieces of evidence were collected at the time, including fingerprints, but no suspects were tied to the crime, officials said.

The case was reexamined in Oct. 2011 and the fingerprints and blood evidence was resubmitted for analysis, Sheriff’s officials said. The results came back in 2012 and tied Solis and Abad to the crime.

Abad, who was in Bakersfield at the time, was taken into custody in May. Solis was also interviewed in May but was already serving a sentence for a separate homicide at Chino State Prison.

Abad is scheduled to be back in Victorville Court on Jan. 15, according to jail records.

Ummm...........editors still sleeping off the New Year's champagne? 1989 to 2013 is not thirteen years. It would be going on twenty four years. Which makes this even more of an achievement for our police department. Hurray for them! You can bet they knew it was twenty four years.

That's funny Barbara. Not really drinker in light of all the alcoholism I've witnessed. For some reason I stupidly thought I was calculating a different year. But thank you so much for kindly pointing out the error.

At least we should let people sleep on the weekends! I remember the last memorial weekend, whenRead More Susan Park was full of baseball banging noises starting at 6:30 am and then screaming and kicking at 7 am. Can Walnut Counsel fix that non-sense??
Michael W June 11, 2013 at 07:27 pm
CP is right, the Walnut Council should be working on REAL quality of life issues, even though theyRead More aren't so glamorous. I'd like to see this issue solved/leaf blowers BANNED verses the Council putting in another red-light camera or parking meters to extort money from Mt. Sac students.

During the hotter months, the days are longer, people try to do outdoor work really early or reallyRead More late since it's cooler. What about all the barking noise created when people walk their dogs really early or really late? These people usually have their favorite spots and they just stand there forever while all the dogs in the street are going crazy. Shouldn't this be banned too?

Hello Me. Sure. I have a press release to post from the district on some Nogales Gates MillenniumRead More scholars. I just haven't had a chance to post yet. Why post this book as if it is NEWS? The headline read as if it were actual news, not a bookRead More review. Shouldn't there be a separate section for books and such?
Patricia Gligor May 28, 2013 at 02:54 pm
I agree but, if there is, I couldn't find it. And, actually, it isn't a book review; it's a bookRead More blurb for the first novel in my Malone mystery series.
