Truck Carrying Human Waste Dumps 100 Gallons on Via Verde

The driver was trapped inside the cab of the truck when it overturned on the Covina Street just north of the Interstate 10.

A truck carrying human waste removed from portable toilets tipped over on a Covina street and dumped 100 gallons of its load this afternoon, causing minor injuries to the driver and a hazardous materials situation to which several government agencies would have to respond.

The driver was trapped inside the cab of the truck when it overturned at about 2:05 p.m. in the 20600 block of Via Verde Street, said California Highway Patrol Officer Ed Jacobs.

"It went into a storm drain," Jacobs said. That required the state Office of Emergency Services and Department of Fish and Wildlife to be called in addition to Caltrans and a company to clean up the mess, he said.

The truck was towed at about 4 p.m., Jacobs said, and the cleanup was underway.
