Baby Boy Surrendered at Pomona Hospital

The infant was left at the hospital as part of Los Angeles County's Safe Surrender Program.

A newborn baby boy was surrendered this week at a hospital in Pomona, according to Los Angeles County Supervisor Don Knabe.

The infant was turned over to the hospital Aug. 5 as part of the county's Safe Surrender Program. It was the fourth safe surrender in 2013 and the 107th since the program began 12 years ago, Knabe said in a news release.

The newborn is in protective custody and will be put of for adoption by the Department of Children and Family Services, he said.

“I’m thankful that this mother, despite her desperate situation, decided to surrender her baby, and give him a second chance at life,” Knabe said. “As word continues to spread about the Program, other moms in similar situations can make the right choice for their babies and themselves, because of Safe Surrender.”

Knabe, whose district includes Diamond Bar, initiated the program and the Board of Supervisors unanimously approved it in 2001.

Under the program, someone may surrender an infant no more than three days old, as long as the baby shows no signs of abuse.
