CAPITOL COMMENT: Huff Talks Proposed Teacher Layoff Bill

The Senate Republican Leader has introduced a bill that would move back the state mandated deadlines for preliminary and final layoff notices.

In the latest Capitol Comment, Senate Republican Leader Bob Huff, R-Diamond Bar, discusses his recent introduction of Senate Bill 559.

The proposed legislation would move back the state mandated deadlines for preliminary and permanent teacher layoff notices.

The purpose for the bill is to give districts a chance to get more information about revenues before sending notices to teachers, according to Huff.  Current law mandates that preliminary notices be sent by March 15.  The early deadline causes districts with little information about the state budget to overestimate the amount of notices they send to teachers only to rescind them by the May 15 final pink slip deadline, he said.
