Closed Portion of Summitridge Trail Loop to Reopen by Month's End

A closed portion of the Summitridge Trail Loop will be re-routed and re-opened by the end of March. The trail was closed because of a steep incline that the city felt could be dangerous for some hikers.

Trail crews are working to re-route a steep portion of the Summitridge Park Trail, a three-mile loop between the Diamond Bar Center and the Steep Canyon Trail, and will finish the project by the end of this month.

Community Services Director Bob Rose said that a near 100-foot stretch of the trail, the Alternate Southern Route, will be re-routed to switchbacks in the hills above the trail's original path, avoiding a 24 percent grade that caused the city to close the alternate trail earlier this year.

A detour through neighborhood streets has been in place since the closure of the alternate route.

The re-route will span approximately 400 feet and keep near the same elevation from the start to the end of the trail.

Rose said that the steeper portion of the trail will remain open for more advanced hikers.
