Diamond Bar on Track to Unify ZIP Code

Since incorporation in 1989, the city of Diamond Bar has been split into two ZIP codes — a problem that officials say is on its way to resolution.

For 22 years, Diamond Bar has managed as a city divided by two ZIP codes, but a solution is in sight to put all of Diamond Bar into 91765.

By July 2012, Mayor Pro-Tem Ling-Ling Chang said, the city is hoping the U.S. Postal Service will complete a process that would provide some order to mail sorting and sales tax revenue generated in the southwest corner of city.

City Manager Jim DeStefano said that nearly 40 percent of the city is within the 91789 ZIP code, which is shared with the City of Industry and the city of Walnut.

The problem not only causes mail confusion but sends some sales tax revenue to the other cities to be tracked down later by Diamond Bar.

"Sales tax revenue is sorted out by ZIP code," Councilwoman Carol Herrera said. "We have to spend money to hire a company to search out the businesses we know we have… If the ZIP code was right, we wouldn't have to spend so much just to collect our money."

Chang said a request to study the problem was denied by the USPS in February, but that a meeting and conference call in March brought forth a new study that "turned out favorable for the city," Chang said.
