LA County Officials Call for 'Obamacare' Compliance

Supervisor Gloria Molina, who represents Walnut, said the county must show it can compete with private health care providers to survive.

Los Angeles County officials Tuesday highlighted the need to quickly transform the county's health care system to comply with the federal Affordable Care Act.

Supervisor Gloria Molina said the county must prove it can compete with private health care providers in order to survive.

"The Affordable Care Act's primary mandates will take effect in just over one year," Molina said. "Our health department must urgently reinvent itself. We must transform from a safety net provider with unlimited demand for services to a more efficient provider vying for newly insured patients in a highly competitive marketplace."

Molina and Supervisor Mark Ridley-Thomas said revamping the department's mission would require strengthening the network of community health providers, upgrading the department's computer records system, and educating the public on the high quality of services available at county facilities.

The two supervisors recommended that Dr. Mitchell Katz, who heads the Department of Health Services, provide a monthly progress report to the Board of Supervisors.

The board unanimously agreed.

Katz -- whose department has been anticipating federal reforms for months -- is scheduled to deliver his first formal report on Nov. 27.

"Our customer services must be second to none," Molina said, as failure would require "an infusion of general fund dollars to avert a system collapse."

Obamacare was a gift to the health insurance companies. Now everyone MUST buy insurance. If you 'love' your health insurance company, you have seen nothing yet. Molina is a racist moron.

Bravo Sup. Molina! Sup. Molina is not a 'racist moron' instead she is DOING HER JOB instead of politcal posturing like others would do. I know... how about keeping the dialogue on topic without name calling & using facts??? As a small business owner who pays for private insurance I am thrilled to see that the Affordable Care Act is being implemented. It is for the benefit of ALL of our citizens and it provides a safety that is shamefully late in coming. Friends, stop believing the scare mongering right. It didn't work on election day. They lost the White House and now they are back to their old scare-tactics. Bush and cronies ran up the deficit. Its time to pay the bills & get back on track - this is a start! http://www.tucsonsentinel.com/opinion/report/110512_potter_obamacare/potter-bit-truth-telling-obamacare/ The legislation is not going to add trillions to the deficit, even though it will expand Medicaid and provide subsidies to low-income individuals and families to buy private coverage. In fact, the opposite is true, according to the nonpartisan Congressional Budget Office. In 2010, the CBO estimated that Obamacare would actually reduce the deficit by $214 billion over 10 years, in part by reducing overpayments to private insurers that operate Medicare Advantage plans.

Middle class workers and their employers will not only pay for their own health insurance, they will pay for uninsured also. How is the IRS going to enforce buying insurance or fining the uninsured? Many do not have any witholding. IRS going to send them a bill then wait for the check in the mail. Obamacare is totally not workable. The Calif system will be crashed before it even begins. No, they will prevent it from crashing by tripling the health insurance bills of those that have insurance. Cannot make Obamacare look to be a failure.

The IRS running around fining people? Really??? As for me, a middle class business owner, I'll pitch in & pay my share! My fellow (majority) voters have spoken in voting returning President Obama to the White House and supporting the Affordable Care Act. As a citizen and as a business owner I don't mind pitching in and providing a safety net to those who cannot afford insurance. Let me be clear my motives are selfish too. In my opinion, It is better to offset the costs of the uninsured visiting the ER when their illnesses could have been mitigated by getting cheaper and more regular treatment. Additionally regular medical attention seeks to make sure that untreated sick people will not be running around getting my kids and my neighbors sick. Is it a perfect answer? No. But its an answer and so far I don't see anything that the right has offered to compare to deal with this issue. And voters clearly want this issue addressed. And that's why the right lost on election day. No answers just scare tactics.

What business do you own. Paperroute? Your comments are idealistic and not practical. Most of those who go to emergency rooms are too stupid to apply for insurance or go to a regular doctor. They will still be going to emergency rooms. Also listen to Molina sometimes. She clearly sides with her race and people like her. At least where I come from, that is being racist.

Mr. Spago, since you ask my business profits are in the 6 figures. I was educated at local college and I contribute the economy as an employer as well. I am a parent and homeowner. HELL YES I AM idealistic. Since when is "idealism" an insult? You are sadly misinformed, angry and without any FACTS to back up any of your hateful speech. Classic tactic - you can't fight back with insight or real facts so you resorting to insulting me? Sadly for you (and your like) I do listen to the entire Board of Supervisors as I am an informed voter. Guess what idea was idealistic too... Social Security. Go tell your retired neighbors how impractical Social Security is. But since you asked, no I don't have a paper route. But guess who had a paper route? Right wing Star Chuck Norris! hah hah! His stupid 10000 years of darkness prediction with Obama's re-election? Where is that? Oh thanks for making me laugh today Vito! Have a wonderful day in this USA where President Obama & Obamacare survives and thrives! I have given you enough of my time today. I offered you an opportunity to discuss this like an adult. Go yell at squirrels in trees - they won't try to debate you. Or ask you for facts. As for me at I'm smiling for days. President Obama was RE-ELECTED and the right LOST! Big hugs since your feeling down and OUT.

Why is it that extremist always look to name calling? Oh, it's because they do not have reason or reality on their side. Why is Molina racist? Even better, why is she clearly racist? Who are the "people like her?" Be careful Vito your racism is showing. Where are these "practical" solutions to the health care problems that you speak of? Shall we just let people die. Why do right wing extremist have to hate everyone else? It is not a bad thing that everyone will have insurance. In many countries socialized medicine is a good program that is widely accepted. America is not a leader on this issue and it needs to start leading. The right needs to get over it. The law is going to be implemented, the ideas of the right were rejected. The program will not be without flaw but it will come to be widely accepted just as medicare. What the right is really scared about is that millions of Americans will remember who was for the health care program and be solid supporters of the Democratic Party for championing the cause.

OK. Have it your way. All I have to do is sit back with the popcorn and watch. Laws of finance and personal psychology have not changed. We will see in 5 years if you are better off than you are now. Bet you are not. Laws of right were rejected? 52% to 49%? Seems not by much. Seems laws of right need to be considered. I hope Boehner screws over Obama the next 4 years. Hardly hate, just truth. Your kind are a bunch of lazy morons that vote like lemmings. Enjoy the entitled life.
