Vandal Strikes at Pantera Park

The city has to replace a concrete trash can. Residents say the vandal left a mess.

Vandals struck Diamond Bar’s Pantera Park over the weekend, destroying at least one heavy concrete trash container, officials said Monday.

City officials said they were aware of the issue and were already taking steps to replace the container. But the damage was there long enough to prompt some residents to take photos of the damage and report it to law enforcement.

Maintenance is already working on replacing the trash. That is the only damage done over the weekend that Cecilia Arellano, public information coordinator with Diamond Bar, was aware of as of Monday afternoon.

One resident who observed the damage, said he saw several trashcans overturned And it appeared as if rocks had been thrown at the snack bar roll-up windows. He also saw a plastic container tossed over some piping on the snack bar roof.

Vandalism is not common at the city’s parks, Arellano said.

“I think it’s pranksters that go in there and have nothing better to do,” Arellano said. But whenever it does happen, it is taken care of immediately.

The city contracts with a waste hauler who will replace the container, she said.

The park is popular with basketball players and was host to the city’s May 12 birthday celebration.
