Walnut City Council to Look at Filling Mayor Vacancy

The Walnut City Council Wednesday night will consider what to do about the vacant mayor's seat.

Tom King's resignation from the council became effective July 1.  The city has already started the application process to fill King's seat later this month, but the council is now looking at whether to do anything about the mayor post.

King was selected by his fellow council members to serve as mayor in April. His term as mayor can be filled on an interim basis by any member of the council without affecting the rotation.

That means that Mayor Pro Tem Antonio "Tony" Cartegena can serve as interim mayor and still become mayor next term, Montgomery said in the memo to the council last month.  The council can also start a new time for the one-year mayor's term.

Councilman Eric Ching said last month that he would favor either picking Cartagena to serve as mayor, letting the mayor post remain vacant while Cartagena continues in his current role, or selecting Tragarz to serve as mayor until King's term expires in April.

The council likely will either take no action where the mayor is concerned, wait until a new council member is appointed and then select a mayor and mayor pro tem, or change the start of the one-year term to start in July and select a mayor and mayor pro tem, City Attorney Michael Montgomery wrote to council in a staff report.

The Walnut City Council will meet at 7 p.m. Wednesday night at City Hall, 21201 La Puente Road.
