Su was the first council member to serve a full one-year term since 2004 when Walnut instituted a change in policy that called for a new mayor every 9.4 months.

In May 2012, the Walnut City Council voted to change that to a year.  Su pushed for the change she said to be on par with the 88 cities in Los Angeles County that picked a new mayor annually.  The only two with 9-month rotation at that time were Walnut and Monterey Park, officials said.
