Walnut Planning Commission Application Deadline April 1

The city of Walnut is searching for a new planning commissioner.

Commissioner Wen Pei resigned in February and Walnut is taking applications to replace him, said Tom Weiner, community development director.

The deadline to apply is 5 p.m. Monday. Residents interested in serving may get and submit an application by contacting the City Clerk’s office at Walnut City Hall, 21201 La Puente Road.

An application can also be obtained on the city’s website.

Pei is the second commissioner to resign in the past year.  Former Commissioner Johnny Chua resigned last year.  In June, the Walnut City Council voted unanimously to approve the appointment of Mark Fernandez to the seat Chua had held.

In February 2012, the City Council voted to approve a new ordinance for appointing commissioners.  

Under the ordinance, commission vacancies are announced 60 days before the end of a term, according to staff. Notice of a vacancy are advertised at City Hall, the Post Office, the library, and on the city's website. 

The application period lasts 30 days and two appointed council members then conduct the interviews.

The interview board makes a recommendation to the City Council and a formal appointment is made by the mayor with the approval of the majority of the council.
