Walnut to Host Public Safety and Emergency Preparedness Seminar Monday

The free event will include a raffle, giveaways, and a chance to talk to public safety vendors and personnel about various topics.

The city of Walnut will host its annual Public Safety and Emergency Preparedness Seminar Monday.

The free event is from 6 to 7:30 p.m. at the Walnut Senior Center and will include a raffle, giveaways, and a chance to talk to public safety vendors and personnel about a wide variety of topics related to emergency preparedness and crime prevention, according to Mayor Antonio "Tony" Cartagena.

"The goal for this year’s seminar is to have open communication with our local public safety officials and emergency responders," officials said in a news release. "Community members and business owners are encouraged to attend this free event and learn how to keep the community safe and prepare for an emergency."

Feature speakers includ Captain Jeff Scroggin from the Walnut/Diamond Bar Sheriff’s Station, Battalion Chief Mario DeFina from the Los Angeles Fire Department, Cliff Hadsell, city of Walnut Emergency Preparedness Coordinator, and Brenda Hunemiller from the Los Angeles County Area D Disaster Preparedness Office.

Residents can submit questions for speakers to answer after each short presentation.

Vendors and local sponsors on hand to answer questions about identity theft, CERT training, and other topics will include the American Red Cross, Wells Fargo, the FBI, and Supervisor Gloria Molina’s office. The Gas Company and Southern California Edison will demonstrate how to turn off utilities safely after an emergency.
