ZIP Code Survey Discussed During City Council Meeting

Heidi Gallegos and Lorry Meyer were also honored during the Tuesday night meeting

During Tuesday night’s City Council meeting, an update was given on the effort to have a single ZIP code for the entire city of Diamond Bar.

According to City Manager James DeStefano, the survey being sent by the postal service will go 2,800 homes and businesses in the 91789 ZIP code, asking if they want to join the rest of Diamond Bar in the 91765 ZIP code. The survey was supposed to be sent out in early September; now, it will reach the affected addresses during the week of October 17.

“If it is a favorable conclusion, the ZIP code change would come in July 2012 with a one year grace period through July 2013,” DeStefano said.

Mayor Pro Tem Ling-Ling Chang said she recently met a resident from the 91789 ZIP code who was “anxious and excited” to see the change.

“They said they had a lot of mail delivery issues in the past due to the different ZIP code,” she said. “For the longest time, people have been using Walnut, 91789 even though they live in Diamond Bar.”

A city tile was presented to Heidi Gallegos, the executive director for the Regional Chamber of Commerce San Gabriel Valley, who is leaving to run the chamber in Eastvale, a new Riverside County city near Norco. Lorry Meyer, who is retiring from her role as recreation specialist, senior programming, was feeling ill and unable to accept her tile at the meeting.

“I have known Heidi forever,” Chang said. “You’ve done so much for our community, and made a huge impact on the Chamber as well as this city and neighboring cities.”

Gallegos thanked city staff and the council for working with her.

“I love community,” she said. “It’s what I am passionate about. This is a beautiful city and I only see great things ahead.”

State Senator Bob Huff was also in the audience, in town due to fall break, and towards the end of the meeting gave an update on what is going on in the capital.

The next City Council meeting is scheduled for 6:30 p.m. at 21865 Copley Drive, Diamond Bar.
