Application Period for District of Choice Starts Thursday

The Walnut Valley Unified School District offers the lottery program for non-residents who want to attend Walnut and Diamond Bar schools.

The Walnut Valley Unified School District will start taking applications for its District of Choice Lottery Program for non-residents on Nov. 1.

The application period will go through Dec. 31 for transitional kindergarten through 12th grade.

The district is touting its recent 906 API score as one of the reasons to consider applying.

Students who live in the Rowland Unified School District are ineligible to apply for the District of Choice program.

The exclusion is the result of a lawsuit Walnut Valley Unified and Rowland Unified settled in early 2011.  Walnut Valley was ordered in January 2011 to stop accepting students within Rowland’s boundaries and pay Rowland $100,000 in legal fees.

Walnut Valley appealed but dropped the matter as part of a settlement the school board approved in May of last year that added $58,000 in legal fees to what the district had to pay Rowland Unified.

Applications will be available to fill out, print and mail on the district's website at www.wvusd.k12.ca.us. Each child must have his or her own application.

They also can be picked up at the district office located at 880 S. Lemon Avenue in Walnut between 8 a.m. and 4p.m. and until noon Dec. 20.

The district office will be closed for winter break starting Dec. 20.

All applications must be received at the District Office (or postmarked) no later than Dec. 31. Duplicate, incomplete or applications received after the deadline will not be processed.

If space is limited, a lottery drawing will take place at the last Board of Education meeting in January.
