Chaparral Students to Explore Computer Science Careers

The Hour of Code event aims to promote the computer science field and give students an introductory lesson on coding.

The following news release was provided by the Walnut Valley Unified School District.

On December 9 and 10, Chaparral Middle School students will participate in the Hour of Code. 

The event aims to promote the field of computer science with an introductory lesson and opportunity to explore coding, according to Math Teacher Denise Loera.

Students will utilize Netbooks, HP Desktops, Chromebooks for the activity. 

Today, we are all surrounded by technology. Commerce, communication, entertainment, and more, all rely on computers. Yet, very few of us know how they actually work.

Computer science education is an increasingly important foundation for success, and everybody can benefit from learning the basics. 

“Every Chaparral student will receive one hour of coding instruction during their math classes,” explained Principal Ron Thibodeaux.

Computer science is among the highest paid college degrees and computer programming jobs are growing at two times the national average, according to the Data via Code.org website. 

The Hour of Code is being held during the annual Computer Science Week, December 9-15, to generate awareness in the field of computer science.
