Mt. SAC Journalism Students Have the Write Stuff

Mt. San Antonio College journalism students proved they had the “write” stuff, walking away as the big winners at the Journalism Association of Community Colleges (JACC) fall regional conference on Oct. 11 and 12 at Cal State Fullerton.  

With more than 600 students competing, Mt. SAC captured top honors for its publications. The web version of the student Mountaineer newspaper, mountiewire.com, won the General Excellence Award as did the student magazine, Substance. Mt. SAC students garnered six first-place wins, 11 second-place honors, seven third-place awards, and six honorable mentions.

Mt. SAC’s Rich Yap (Rowland Heights) won first place in the student designed advertisement and bring in student designed advertisement categories; second place in profile feature writing and magazine cover; third place in non profile feature writing; magazine essay, and online feature story; and honorable mention in opinion writing and student designed advertisement.

Albert Serna (Covina) won first place in student-designed advertisement and bring in student designed advertisement, and Adolfo Tigerino (Loma Linda) won first place for sports photo and second place for news writing. Harmon Huynh (West Covina) won first place for student designed advertisement.

Other winners for Mt. SAC were Beatrice Alcala (Walnut), second place for magazine design and magazine cover, and third place for magazine photo essay; Vanessa Solis (Alhambra), second place for copy editing; Sterling Knight (Rowland Heights), second place for feature photo and honorable mention for student designed advertisement; Eugene Arellanes (Fontana) and Jose de Castro (Covina), second place for magazine photo; Aldo Padilla (Los Angeles) and Brigette Villesenor (Covina), second place for magazine cover; Monica Garcia (Pomona), third place for broadcast news writing; Kristina Gonzalez (Ontario), third place for magazine essay; Karla Mejia (Hacienda Heights), honorable mention for editorial cartoon; and Emily Castellanos (Adelanto), honorable mention for magazine photo.
